In an emergency effort to halt the termination of potentially viable pension plans, Congressman George Miller (D-CA) introduced legislation, HR 2327, that would impose a six month moratorium on pension plan terminations instituted by the PBGC. This moratorium would apply in cases where the plan sponsor is in bankruptcy proceedings and the termination of the plan would result in a loss of benefits which are guaranteed. HR 2327 would be effective for working pension plans as of May 1, 2005, and therefore it would apply to our retirement security as our Union seeks judicial review of the viability of the Flight Attendant Pension Plan. AFA Members and Retirees need to act now to support this critical legislation!
The most effective way to lobby our representatives is through personal contact. So, in addition to our E-Activist Campaign, we are calling all Members to Washington DC next week starting Tuesday May 17 through Thursday May 19.
Our Government Affairs Department will be coordinating activities from the CWA Office at 501 Third Street, NW. The campaign coordination will take place in the 9th floor War Room from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day – but we encourage Members to arrive between 9:00 a.m. and noon in order to maximize opportunity for success in contacting your Representatives.
Members and retirees should visit the War Room to retrieve a lobby packet and directions before heading to the Hill. AFA Government Affair Committee volunteers will be available for your assistance.
If you’re taking DC’s Metro subway system, proceed to the Red Line and exit at Judiciary Square.
